DescriptionRectangular dome-lid leather-covered box; dome-lid hinged with leather spanning exterior of box with iron lock and hasp on front; brass bail handle in center of top; leather on top and front embossed in decorative diamond pattern with scrolled border on edges; leather on ends and back tooled in diamond pattern with tool that created four parallel lines; interior lined with uncut pages from two printed books, one religious text, with added dots in regular alternating pattern; fabric tape nailed on proper right end to top of side and lower edge of top side.
MarkingsThe religious text (chapter "Arguments, &c") cites "Lardners Works, vol. IX" and in another location notes a citation dated 1788 (which is likely THE WORKS OF NATHANIEL LARDNER D.D.: IN ELEVEN VOLUMES published in that year.)
