DescriptionArmchair with tablet crest rail, slightly scrolled to rear along top edge; solid recangular splat set into a shaped shoe; slightly shaped stiles, rectangular in cross section that sweep into shaped and scrolled arms supported by plain round pillars blocked at base and screwed to outside of seat rails; stiles continue to floor with slight backwards rake; seat rails slightly rounded on top edges with blocking at front corners; round pillar front legs rest of flat H stretchers, with slight shaping to side stretchers, and front paw feet; trapezoidal leather slipseat with original upholstery.
MarkingsPartial printed round label gllued inside proper left seat rail: Lable is white in center with blue text, blue around perimeter with white text, and center top is a red triangle with white and red text. Red triangle contains center red triangle with white letters "G R/ M" and in red text on white background along sides of triangle "...GRAND RAPIDS/ TRADE MARK/ REGISTERED". In blue text within white center ground "Chairs and/ Tables/ No." and in pencil after the "No." "4290 1/2" 646" and an indeciferable word. In white text on blue band around edge of label "MICH[IGAN CHAI]R COMPANY" and "GRAND RAPIDS. MICH."
ProvenanceThe desk chair was originally owned by the Reverend W.A.R. Goodwin, whose foresight led to the preservation of Williamsburg and the interest of John D. Rockefeller, Jr.
