DescriptionNeedlework pocketbook or wallet embroidered in queen’s stitch with black, brown, pink, and green silk thread. Stitched inscription, “I.D.H. 1794” on black band on interior of pocketbook. Pocketbook folds in two parts with two pockets and one stiffened divider on either side. The edges are bound in silk. The pocketbook is lined in light blue silk taffeta.Label TextNeedlework pocketbooks and wallets were common accessories for both men and women throughout the 18th century, used to store money, papers, and other small accessories. Personalized touches, like initials and makers' names, are common. 'IDH', stitched onto this pocketbook, may refer to a member of the Heath family from Prince George County, VA.
