DescriptionPair of octagonal plates from a service owned by Jonathan Sayward of York, Maine; decorated in opaque enamels with two water buffalo.Label TextThis pair of octagonal dishes is from a larger service that was purchased by Nathaniel Barrell during his three-year stint in England in the 1760s. Nathaniel Barrell, a Boston native, was a merchant and farmer who in 1758 married Sarah (Sally) Sayward, daughter of Judge Jonathan Sayward of York, Maine. Barrell served in the Massachusetts convention during the ratification of the constitution. Portions of this service may be found in the collections of the Sayward-Wheeler House in York Harbor, Maine.
